Excavators For Groundworks
A compact digger can suit restricted access and smaller excavation work, while a larger excavator may be needed for reach, loading or more demanding material. The right choice depends on what the machine must do once it reaches the working area. Give the excavation dimensions, ground conditions and the way excavated material will leave the site.
We welcome enquiries for mini diggers and 360 excavators for commercial projects. Include any preferred machine class, but explain the task as well. A familiar size may be a poor choice if the loading position, attachment or travel route differs from the last job.
Access, Reach And Working Space
Measure the narrowest entrance, available height and any tight turns between the unloading point and the excavation. Allow for the machine’s operating space as well as its travelling dimensions. A digger that fits through a passage may still lack room to turn, slew or load safely.
Describe nearby walls, parked vehicles, overhead services and adjoining operations. Short tail swing may help in a confined work area, but it does not remove the need for a safe exclusion zone. Provide photographs where access is difficult to explain and mark the intended excavation separately from the delivery entrance.
For loading away from the excavation, consider whether a site dumper is needed. Match the spoil route and receiving arrangement to the excavation programme so the digger is not repeatedly stopping while material is moved by another method.
Underground Services And Site Safety
Before excavation, the site team must address buried services. HSE’s underground cable guidance describes the need for planning, locating and identifying services, and safe excavation. A hire booking does not establish that the ground is clear or that digging can begin.
Pedestrians must be separated from excavator operations. HSE’s excavator guidance covers machine selection, visibility, slewing hazards and competent operation. Include these points in the site arrangements and provide safe instructions for anyone directing movements.
For an excavator hired to work in Birmingham, PUWER covers whether the machine suits the task and how it is used safely. If the excavator will lift loads, explain that requirement before booking so the machine configuration, lifting information and applicable LOLER arrangements can be checked. A bucket machine should not simply be assumed ready for lifting work.
Buckets, Breakers And Handover
Specify the trench or bucket width, material and required finish. A narrow trench, bulk excavation and grading task can each need a different bucket. If you need a breaker, describe the material and the work area so that compatibility and the effect on the hire package can be assessed.
At handover, check the machine identity, attachment list, visible condition and operating instructions. Ask for the quick-hitch procedure and the checks required before changing an attachment. Familiarity with one machine does not replace instructions for the actual equipment supplied.
Agree how daily checks, fuel and reported defects will be handled during the hire. Stop work if a safety-related fault arises and contact the supplying firm. The agreed process should cover what happens if a replacement is needed or the excavation stage takes longer than expected.
Digger Hire Costs And Dates
Machine size, attachment choice, hire duration and delivery access influence cost. Transport may be a significant part of a short hire, so confirm delivery and collection together. Ask whether the agreement includes an hours allowance and how additional use, fuel, cleaning or damage will be charged.
State the planned start and finish dates, plus any dependency on permits, surveys or preceding work. If the schedule is uncertain, ask how extensions and cancellations are handled before accepting the quotation. For several machines or stages, a plant hire package can make the sequence easier to specify.
Digger Hire Questions
What Size Digger Do I Need?
Digger size depends on excavation depth, reach, ground conditions and access, including the working space around the machine. Send dimensions and photographs rather than relying on weight alone. The proposed machine and attachments should be checked against the job before booking, with safe access and unloading arranged by the site team.
Can I Hire An Excavator With A Breaker?
Excavator hire with a breaker can be requested by specifying the material, job size and site restrictions. The supplying firm must confirm the attachment and machine are compatible and available. Include any noise, dust or nearby-structure concerns in your enquiry so the proposed setup can be considered alongside the work method.
